Click on "Play" above for a playlist of good (fairly contemporary) tunes from Latin American & The Caribbean. That playlist is for your personal enjoyment; it is not a required part of the class. Everything below, however, is here as a required part of the course.
Good luck with the assignments!
Week 1: History and Art History (Lima, Peru)
Welcome to the art section for week 1. Start by downloading and reading this document on strategies for analyzing art: PDF Reading: Strategies for "Reading" (Analyzing) Art
Once you have carefully read through the "Strategies" document (above), you can look below, where you will find a map of the "Indies" followed by a series of "castas" paintings. These paintings were used to teach people about the different racial castes in Spanish America. Pick two of the caste paintings in this week's "Art Gallery.." Write 3-4 paragraphs that put into practice the “Reading strategies for Art" listed at the beginning of the “Art and Music" tab. This analysis will end up going into your first Turnitin Essay.
Week 2: Cultural Anthropology and History (Rio de Janeiro)
Take a close look at these 19th century lithographs made from the paintings of German explorer Johann Moritz Rugendas.
